Merchants of Cool

Throughout our society, we as teens are constantly exposed to what is trendy and what is new. A lot of us often keep up with the current trends because we want to fit in with the crowd and be perceived as "cool." Our current teen market is what is known as "pop." Just like a decade ago, "pop" was related to sex and violence. In our society, the "pop" hasn't really changed because when we look around us to see what is cool and trendy, it tends to be related to violence and sex. Some of our favorite women celebrities like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, and Selena Gomez are all completely different when it comes to their voices and what they look like. However, they all have one thing in common-see appeal. Whether it's what they are wearing or what they are singing about, it al relates back to sex. Their clothing at red carpet events is very scandalous to where their outfits go from being see through to almost not wearing anything. However, these celebrities do this because they know what is in and what is trendy. In our society, "fashion" relates back to showing off women's assists because that's what is "cool." In the picture above, you can see that these celebrities are all flaunting off their bodies for everyone to see, especially for the media. Our society wants teens to feel "cool" by showing themselves off as a sex figure or even just talking about the idea of sex. Besides the sex appeal in our "pop" society, we often also use violence. We listen to songs on the radio that talk about gangs, guns, and al of this violence that it has become one of our norms. We listen to sex and violence songs so much that we probably don't even realize when we listen to them anymore. According to The Atlantic, 92% of top Billboard songs are about sex and 1 in every 3 songs are about violence of some type. So just how it was a decade, the "pop" in our society hasn't really changed, and what's new and trendy is still violence and sex.
