Madison and Vine

May 7th, 2017
Madison and vine is a technique companies use to place products in movies, tv shows, etc and get their brand out without being too out there. When I was thinking about a movie or tv series that randomly places companies or products in them a lot, I immediately thought about the controversy the Man of Steel brought a few years ago when it was released. Many people said that there was too much product placement within the movie and it completely distracted the viewers of the actual plot line. Excessive product placement is a bad thing, but it could also be a good thing. With everyone talking about how much this movie was sponsored, it brought a lot of attention to who was sponsoring this movie. This actually worked in their favor because just like this video mentioned, they made over a hundred million dollars alone before the movie was actually released just off of the companies paying them so they could get their brand out there. I couldn't find just one scene from this movie that had excessive product placement, but like the video shows, it was more throughout the movie to where it got excessive. This movie doesn't make it too obvious to where they are constantly talking about the product, but they do it in more discreet ways like simply showing the actors walking inside of Sears or filming in front of a 7-Eleven. I think now that I know more about companies techniques they use to get their name out there, especially the madison and vine technique, I am going to pay a lot more attention to product placement when I watch movies and tv.

  1. Very interesting point Kaitlyn, this makes me think about Donald Trump. He has said some atrocious things and instead of just let it go and leave him alone, this just brought him even more attention from the media, which was just giving him what he wants: even more attention. This could unfortunately be setting the stage for amateur advertisers, who think that the more bad things they say will bring them more attention and help them break out of this "clutter" that our attention was brought to in the persuaders.

  2. I also agree, in a certain sense. Like she said the product placement can be beneficial but only to the advertiser otherwise it takes away from the experience of the audience and ruins it for them rather than makes it better not to account for how it takes advantage of them as well. And on your coverage of speaking of celebrity advertisement that is something new I wasn't really aware of and am actually really interested into it but it is a little vague and I think needs more explaining.
